How long does a printed label remain legible and of good quality?
That depends on the ink and the label material used:

  • Pigment ink (C-series): very durable, water-, UV- and chemical-resistant. Remains legible for years, even in harsh conditions.
  • Dye ink (D-series): brighter colours, but less resistant. Ideal for short-term applications or indoor use.
Please note: Durability also depends on the choice of material (paper vs. synthetic) and environmental factors (sunlight, moisture, abrasion).

Can I also print photos and images on my labels?
Absolutely! Epson ColorWorks printers are highly suitable for printing full-colour images, logos, and even product photos. The prints are sharp and vibrant, provided you:

  • Use original Epson ink (for colour fastness and detail reproduction)
  • Choose high-quality label material (glossy paper or synthetic material for the best result)
  • Print at 1200 dpi resolution for maximum sharpness
Can I use different label formats on one printer?
Yes, Epson ColorWorks printers are highly flexible and support multiple label widths and lengths, allowing you to use one printer for a wide range of applications. You can work with:


1. Die-cut labels (pre-cut labels with fixed dimensions)

  • Available in fixed formats, suitable for product labels, barcode labels, etc.
  • Switching formats requires adjusting the settings in the printer driver.
  • After each switch, an automatic media calibration is recommended.

2. Continuous label rolls (continuous media)

  • These rolls have no pre-punched shape or detection gaps, so you define the length per print job.
  • Ideal for applications where the label content varies in length per product or batch, such as receipts, tickets, or labels with a lot of variable information.
  • You save on stock and do not need a separate roll for each format.
  • Your printer automatically cuts the label to the desired length (all Ae models have an auto-cutter).

3. Blackmark materials or custom labels

  • Use blackmark detection for non-standard shapes or non-standardised labels (such as contour-cut labels or tags).
With Epson ColorWorks printers, you can print multiple formats, shapes, and lengths on one and the same machine – ideal when you need flexibility or custom work.

How do I prevent waste and save on consumable costs?
The following tips will help you lower your cost per label without compromising on quality:

  • Print only what you need: on-demand printing prevents excess stock and waste.
  • Use efficient designs: lower ink coverage means less ink consumption.
  • Choose the right material: for temporary use, paper is often sufficient instead of synthetic material.
  • Print in 'Draft' or 'Standard' mode: for internal labels or less critical applications.
  • Use larger rolls and cartridges: fewer changeovers, lower cost per metre.
  • Use appropriate label material: Make sure the type of label material matches the application. Use inexpensive but functional vellum for simple logistics applications, paper where possible, and plastic where necessary.
How do I print borderless?
Borderless printing is possible with Epson ColorWorks printers, provided you work carefully:

  • Use quality media with a stable side margin and consistent shape.
  • Set the size slightly larger in your driver (e.g. 0.5 mm extra width/height) to print just beyond the edge.
  • Watch out for ink on the liner: this does not dry and can cause smudges. So do not print too far beyond the label.
For truly full-bleed labels without the risk of smudging, it is best to use specially die-cut labels or labels with black mark detection and extra waste material around the label.

How often do I need to replace the ink cartridges?
That depends on your print volume, color usage, and label size. The printer automatically tracks the ink level per color and gives a timely warning when a cartridge is running low.

You only need to replace the empty cartridge – the printers work with individual colors (CMYK), so nothing goes to waste.

Tip: Do you print a lot? Then consider a printer with larger cartridges such as the CW-C8000 for lower cost per print.

Can I print barcodes and QR codes with an Epson ColorWorks printer?
Yes, Epson ColorWorks printers are excellent for printing barcodes, QR codes, and other variable data. Thanks to the high resolution of 1200 dpi, barcodes are razor-sharp and easy to scan, even at smaller sizes.

Combined with label software such as NiceLabel, you can dynamically generate codes and automatically incorporate them into your label designs.

How do I achieve the best print quality with my Epson ColorWorks printer?
Use these tips to achieve optimal print results:

  • Use the right label material: always choose inkjet-compatible material (matte or glossy) suited to your printer (BK or MK version).
  • Set the correct media type: select the appropriate type (Glossy, Matte, Synthetic, etc.) in the printer driver or control panel.
  • Perform regular nozzle checks: this prevents print streaks or blurring.
  • Use original Epson ink: only then will you get the promised color intensity, durability, and sharpness.
  • Use the correct ICM profiles: make sure you have and use the correct ICM profiles when printing. Request the desired profile, which must match:
    • Print material
    • Printer model and version
    • Print speed/quality
  • Keep the printer switched on: this allows the print head to clean itself automatically and stay in top condition.
