What do the designations Ae and Pe mean for Epson ColorWorks printers?
The designations Ae and Pe indicate which finishing option the printer has:
- Ae (Auto-cutter): The printer automatically cuts the label after printing. You can of course decide whether and when it cuts.
- Pe (Peeler): The printer automatically removes the backing paper, so you can immediately pick up and apply the label. Handy for production and warehouse applications.
Please note: Converting from Ae to Pe (or vice versa) afterwards is not possible.
When should I choose a 4-inch or an 8-inch printer?
This depends on the maximum size of your labels:
- 4-inch printers (C4000, C6000): Ideal for labels up to approximately 10 cm wide (most common size).
- 8-inch printers (C6500, C8000): For larger labels up to approximately 21 cm wide, such as chemical labels, pallet labels, or large product labels.
What is the difference between BK (Gloss) and MK (Matte) versions of the printers?
The designations BK and MK refer to the type of black ink:
- BK (Gloss Black): specially developed for glossy and semi-glossy media.
- MK (Matte Black): ideal for matte or porous materials, offering better adhesion and blackness on matte paper.

What are the differences between the Epson ColorWorks C-series and D-series (such as the CW-C6000 and CW-D6000)?
The Epson ColorWorks C-series and D-series differ primarily in ink type:
- C-series (pigment ink): High durability, resistant to water, UV, and chemicals. Suitable for demanding applications such as industrial, chemical, and outdoor use.
- D-series (dye ink): More vibrant colors and higher gloss. Less durable when exposed to water or UV light. Ideal for labels that are used for a short period or where visual appearance is more important than durability.
Are Epson ColorWorks printers compatible with other software such as BarTender, NiceLabel, or ERP systems?
Yes, Epson ColorWorks printers integrate very well:
- NiceLabel and BarTender: Seamless integration for label design and variable data printing.
- ERP and WMS systems: Integration is possible via standard drivers or ZPL II emulation (similar to Zebra printers). This allows them to easily replace existing printers in your workflows.
- SAP: Fully supported integration for SAP systems.
Is borderless printing possible with Epson ColorWorks printers?
Yes, borderless printing is certainly possible with Epson ColorWorks printers, provided the printer and label material are configured carefully.
There are two practical ways to achieve this safely:
Option 1: Pre-cut labels (die-cut labels with GAP)
- Use high-quality labels with a consistent and stable side margin (liner next to the label).
- Set the label size in the printer driver slightly larger than the actual size — for example, a few tenths of a millimeter. This way you print just beyond the edge of the label, achieving a fully borderless print.
- Important: do not print too far beyond the label, as the ink will not dry on the liner. This can cause stains, smearing, and ink on your fingers.
Option 2: Labels with waste matrix remaining on the roll (Blackmark detection)
- Use labels where the waste material (the matrix) around the label remains on the roll.
- These labels are detected using a blackmark on the back of the liner.
- Because there is usually at least 5 mm of extra label material around the actual label, any excess ink printed beside the label is properly absorbed, allowing you to print well beyond the label edge without risk of stains or contamination.

Can I easily replace my existing thermal Zebra printer with an Epson ColorWorks printer?
Yes, Epson ColorWorks printers support ZPL II emulation. This means that in many cases you can use them as a direct replacement for a Zebra thermal printer, without major changes to existing software or workflows.
What is meant by industrial use with Epson ColorWorks printers?
By industrial use we mean intensive, daily, and continuous use of the printer in production or logistics environments, where reliability, speed, and capacity are essential. Typical characteristics include:
- Daily printing of large quantities of labels (often thousands per day).
- Printing of durable labels that are resistant to water, chemicals, and harsh conditions.
- Minimal downtime, easy operation, and limited maintenance requirements.
Which Epson ColorWorks printer is most suitable for intensive industrial use?
The choice of the most suitable Epson ColorWorks printer depends on your specific use case:
Epson CW-C8000 (industrial powerhouse)
- Ideal for printing very high volumes of labels (up to thousands per day).
- Very high print speed (up to 300 mm/s).
- Excellent for labels up to 108 mm wide (4-inch).
Epson CW-C6500 or CW-D6500 (for wide labels)
- Suitable for labels up to 212 mm wide (8-inch).
- Ideal when wider labels are required, for example for pallet labels or chemical labels.
- Slightly lower speed (approx. 85 mm/s), but with added flexibility for wider labels.
Epson CW-C6000 series (multiple printers in parallel)
- Do you frequently switch between label formats? Then it may be more practical to deploy multiple smaller printers, such as the CW-C6000, in parallel.
- Three Epson CW-C6000 printers together can be faster when there are many format changes than a single CW-C8000.
- This creates extra flexibility and prevents delays caused by changing rolls.

How good is the print quality of an Epson ColorWorks printer?
This is of course a relative question. Realistically speaking, at the time of writing there is no color label printer available that prints better than the Epson ColorWorks CW-C series. You print in high resolution (up to 1200 dpi) with vivid colors and sharp details. Ideal for labels with logos, pictograms, or variable information. The color accuracy of these printers is also exceptionally good — through the use of ICM profiles, among other things, the color fidelity is remarkably high.
